Scientific Panel Artist Statement
I feel my work represents a frustration with my present metropolitan surroundings which has created in an interest in the elements of nature. The elements of nature inspired both the microcosm and macrocosm in my Scientific Panel. The microcosm is represented by many elements in my piece the human mouth, a rose, veins, nerves, fish eggs, molecules and a moth on a leaf of a tree. The macrocosm is represented by a large expansive forest. I was inspired by the panels in sequential art to use clear sections to separate each of elements of my piece. The Fibonacci sequence was represented by the use of clear the rectilinear sections which create the Golden Rectangle. I wanted to achieve aesthetic qualities which contrast the beautiful and strange parts of the natural world. My work resonates with a sense of mystery to intrigue the viewer.
The 2-Dimensional qualities required in the criteria of this piece was to create the illusion of depth with monochromatic values by using striations to represent a microcosm, a macrocosm and the Fibonacci sequence. The challenges I faced were caused by the quality of the tempera paint, my minimal experience with painting and my ability to comprehend the concepts of this project. The most challenging aspect of painting was to render dimension with striations. Within my piece I used many textures to create striations making this concept easier to comprehend. My knowledge of figure and ground relationships helped me make decisions when choosing each value and I began creating depth by the using one-point and atmospheric perspective. I struggled to understand the Fibonacci sequence in the beginning of this project. I began to grasp this concept after doing more research on the Golden Rectangle and was I able to successfully include the it into my design. I continued painting even when I was not confident, this increased my skills as a painter which made working on this piece very gratifying. I enjoyed shaping my original concepts within the criteria of this project. The struggled with painting my project but gained experience and learned new design concepts which furthered my abilities as an artist, this allowed me to create a visually unified piece.

Painting progress: The Rose
I begin painting by starting with the rose section of my panel. I seems easier to paint then the previous project since I already had some practice with the tempera paint.
I took pictures of my progress. I feel like I am finished with this section for now.
