I worked as hard as I could today but I wasn't felling very well. I worked on fixing my mounted pieces and getting my design on Bristol board.
I found out I had a low fever when I got home. I'm feeling better now. I finished transferring design. Now I'm ready to start painting! I'm nervous.
This blog will follow the journey of my freshman Foundation Design class at Moore College of Art and Design.

Art Quote of the Week
Oscar Wilde
“No great artist ever sees things as they really are. If he did, he would cease to be an artist.” - Oscar Wilde
As we begin to create our Scientific Panels we consider surrealistic elements. A major part of surrealism is using the world elements around you to create your own personal version. Creating artwork is not always about copy the world as you see it but shaping into your of the world vision. In this process a person become an artist.
Chapter 4: Scale and Proportion
Reading/Writing Assignment: Design Basics: Chapter 4 Scale/Proportion:
Dorothea Tanning
Ein klein nachtmusik
1946; "A little night music"
How is scale and proportion integrated into a surrealistic piece of art? Describe the effect?
Scale and proportion are integrated into this work by the use of the exaggerated scale of the sunflower in proportion to the girls and the interior of the house. The large scale of the sunflower give the painting a dreamlike effect.
Ideal geometry are forms created that have ideal proportion they are based on mathematical ratios created by the ancient Greeks
An example of of this is the golden mean which is width is to length as length is to length plus width.
(Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue
1921; Oil on canvas)
Piet Mondrian used the golden ration within his paintings to create rectangles
The golden rectangle was used to create the Parthenon
The theme of my panel is nature along with strange surrealist juxtapositions
Write about how what you have read relates to your final project
This reading relates to my current project because I will be using the golden ratio to divide my Scientific panel. Scale and proportion will be used to create a macrocosm of a forest and small individual microcosms.
- Find a surrealistic painting form the previous guide, and describe the following about the artwork:

Art Quote of the Week
Francis Bacon
Triptych, May–June 1973, 1973. Oil on canvas
Figure with Meat (1954) Oil on canvas
“The job of the artist is always to deepen the mystery.”
— | Francis Bacon |
I choose this quote because it is translates literally to what we are learning in class. In class we are doing realistic drawings and using them to create abstracted design. In the process abstraction we create an visual mystery for the viewer.

Abstraction of an Object
The current project in design class is to abstract an realistic object to create 3 painted design which show figure and ground relationships.
I choose a key as my object. Before making the abstracted design we did realistic drawings of the objects.
Here is my key drawing done in my sketchbook.
Next a section of the drawing was chosen with viewfinder.
The section was traced on a grid and enlarged by hand and transferred on 8 inch square Bristol paper.
The designs had to be painted in 3 flat values of grey, black and white using tempera paint.
I was happy to start the new project it seemed interesting But I ran into problems right away. I had trouble using the grid to transfer my design, mixing the paint and painting the actual design. I had painted many time before in acrylic oil and watercolor but never in tempera. It's difficult getting used to this paint which made the project more complicated.
My 3 values of grey, black, white and my paint brushes.

my supplies
My paint was streaking.
I don't know what happened here.
Here are my design so far. I will clean them up some more later.
Next up, the implied and actual texture design!
Mistakes!!!!!!!
In the process of painting my abstraction of an object layouts I keep making mistakes. I am really struggling with this project. I feel like I am spending more time trying to fix my paintings then actually painting.
I'm trying my best and I hope my paintings turn out okay. I am going to have to be patient and careful as I continue to work.
While waiting for paint to dry I drew how I feel on my iPad in sketchbook pro in three values of grey of course.

Art Quote of the Week
Wonderfully beautiful and macabre painting by Francisco Goya
“The act of painting is about one heart telling another heart where he found salvation.”
— | FRANCISCO GOYA This quote is important because it describes why an artist creates artwork. Art gives artists a purpose and a way to express feelings that could destroy them otherwise. Therefore art creates a form of salvation for many artists. |
