My finished piece.

Here is my finished piece. I am happy to be finished but kinda sad it is the end of this class.

Now I have to mount this!!! I am very nervous!!!

A process photo from Monday.

I am now finished my piece but here is how I started painting the forest.

Scientific Panel Artist Statement

I feel my work represents a frustration with my present metropolitan surroundings which has created in an interest in the elements of nature. The elements of nature inspired both the microcosm and macrocosm in my Scientific Panel. The microcosm is represented by many elements in my piece the human mouth, a rose, veins, nerves, fish eggs, molecules and a moth on a leaf of a tree. The macrocosm is represented by a large expansive forest. I was inspired by the panels in sequential art to use clear sections to separate each of  elements of my piece. The Fibonacci sequence was represented by the use of clear the rectilinear sections which create the Golden Rectangle. I wanted to achieve aesthetic qualities which contrast the beautiful and strange parts of the natural world. My work resonates with a sense of mystery to intrigue the viewer.
The 2-Dimensional qualities required in the criteria of this piece was to create the illusion of depth with monochromatic values by using striations to represent a microcosm, a macrocosm and the Fibonacci sequence. The challenges I faced were caused by the quality of the tempera paint, my minimal experience with painting and my ability to comprehend the concepts of this project. The most challenging aspect of painting was to render dimension with striations. Within my piece I used many textures to create striations making this concept easier to comprehend. My knowledge of figure and ground relationships helped me make decisions when choosing each value and I began creating depth by the using one-point and atmospheric perspective. I struggled to understand the Fibonacci sequence in the beginning of this project. I began to grasp this concept after doing more research on the Golden Rectangle and was I able to successfully include the it into my design. I continued painting even when I was not confident, this increased my skills as a painter which made working on this piece very gratifying. I enjoyed shaping my original concepts within the criteria of this project. The struggled with painting my project but gained experience and learned new design concepts which furthered my abilities as an artist, this allowed me to create a visually unified piece.

Painting progress: The Rose

I begin painting by starting with the rose section of my panel. I seems easier to paint then the previous project since I already had some practice with the tempera paint.
I took pictures of my progress. I feel like I am finished with this section for now.

In the studio.

I worked as hard as I could today but I wasn't felling very well. I worked on fixing my mounted pieces and getting my design on Bristol board.

I found out I had a low fever when I got home. I'm feeling better now. I finished transferring design. Now I'm ready to start painting! I'm nervous.

All my inspirations were combined to create this.
I made a lot of changes when I created the to scale drawing.

Art Quote of the Week

Oscar Wilde

“No great artist ever sees things as they really are. If he did, he would cease to be an artist.” - Oscar Wilde

As we begin to create our Scientific Panels we consider surrealistic elements. A major part of surrealism is using the world elements  around you to create your own personal version. Creating artwork is not always about copy the world as you see it but shaping into your of the world vision. In this process a person become an artist.

Chapter 4: Scale and Proportion

Reading/Writing Assignment: Design Basics: Chapter 4 Scale/Proportion:

  • Find a surrealistic painting form the previous guide, and describe the following about the artwork:

Dorothea Tanning
Ein klein nachtmusik
1946; "A little night music"

How is scale and proportion integrated into a surrealistic piece of art? Describe the effect?

Scale and proportion are integrated into this work by the use of the exaggerated scale of the sunflower in proportion to the girls and the interior of the house. The large scale of the sunflower give the painting a dreamlike effect.

  • Discuss proportion and the notion of ideal geometry in a composition. Give an example
Proportions in art are created when the size of thing is judge against another such as in figure drawing. In figure drawing the the head is used to measure proportions of the body.
Ideal geometry are forms created that have ideal proportion they are based on mathematical ratios created by the ancient Greeks
An example of of this is the golden mean which is width is to length as length is to length plus width.
(Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue
1921; Oil on canvas)

Piet Mondrian used the golden ration within his paintings to create rectangles

  • What is the golden rectangle and give an example of it’s use in a composition
The golden rectangle is an ideal rectangle created with the golden ratio,
The golden rectangle was used to create the Parthenon

  • Discuss your current final project and what will be your inspiration
The current and final project is the Scientific Panel which must include a golden ration, a macrocosm and a microcosm. The main inspiration for my project was instead of creating a piece that flowed together, I wanted to create a panel separated into pannel like a comic in the within the golden rectangle.
The theme of my panel is nature along with strange surrealist juxtapositions

Write about how what you have read relates to your final project

This reading relates to my current project because I will be using the golden ratio to divide my Scientific panel. Scale and proportion will be used to create a macrocosm of a forest and small individual microcosms.

Art Quote of the Week

Francis Bacon
Triptych, May–June 1973, 1973. Oil on canvas

Figure with Meat (1954) Oil on canvas

The job of the artist is always to deepen the mystery.
Francis Bacon

I choose this quote because it is translates literally to what we are learning in class. In class we are doing realistic drawings and using them to create abstracted design. In the process abstraction we create an visual mystery for the viewer.

Abstraction of an Object

The current project in design class is to abstract an realistic object to create 3 painted design which show figure and ground relationships.
I choose a key as my object. Before making the abstracted design we did realistic drawings of the objects.
Here is my key drawing done in my sketchbook.

Next a section of the drawing was chosen with  viewfinder.
The section was traced on a grid and enlarged by hand and transferred on 8 inch square Bristol paper.
The designs had to be painted in 3 flat values of grey, black and white using tempera paint.

I was happy to start the new project it seemed interesting  But I ran into problems right away. I had trouble using the grid to transfer my design, mixing the paint and painting the actual design. I had painted many time before in acrylic oil and watercolor but never in tempera. It's difficult getting used to this paint which made the project more complicated.

My 3 values of grey, black, white and my paint brushes.

My paint was streaking.

I don't know what happened here.

Here are my design so far. I will clean them up some more later.

Next up, the implied and actual texture design!

Mistakes!!!!!!!

In the process of painting my abstraction of an object layouts I keep making mistakes. I am really struggling with this project. I feel like I am spending more time trying to fix my paintings then actually painting.

I'm trying my best and I hope my paintings turn out okay. I am going to have to be patient and careful as I continue to work.

While waiting for paint to dry I drew how I feel on my iPad in sketchbook pro in three values of grey of course.

Art Quote of the Week

Wonderfully beautiful and macabre painting by Francisco Goya

The act of painting is about one heart telling another heart where he found salvation.
FRANCISCO GOYA

This quote is important because it describes why an artist creates artwork. Art gives artists a purpose and a way to express feelings that could destroy them otherwise. Therefore art creates a form of salvation for many artists.

LITTLE VOYAGEUR (2012) BY RAY CAESAR (Homework # 4 Part 2)

LITTLE VOYAGEUR (2012) BY RAY CAESAR

Little Voyager was created by Ray Caesar in acrylic and digital media on panel. A pattern is used on the girl's coat and the pattern is defined by a grid. A texture is used in the background creating a foggy and dark landscape. All the texture in this piece is implied texture because is a digital media print. Value contrast is shown in this piece by the use contrasting values in the foreground and less dramatic changes in value in the background. Emphasis is created by te light from the pipe that creates more contrasting values. Chiaroscuro is used throughout the picture especially to create the volumes of the girls face and body. Atmospheric perspective is used to show the distance of the landscape from the viewer compared to the closeness of the girl.

Art Quote of the Week

Andy Warhol
Nico & Andy Warhol as Batman and Robin

“Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.” - Andy Warhol

I like this quote because it shows a more spontaneous method of creating art without an actual concept or feeling you want to evoke in the viewer in mind. In Foundation Design we create design within a certain criteria some which should display create a certain feeling and others which do not.

When I create personal artwork I usually don't think about what others will think if they will like it or not until I am finished but I do think about a story or a concept behind the artwork. I have been given negative feed back for some of the content of my personal artwork but I try not to let this affect me. I won't change my vision.

Homework #4 (Part 1)

Chapter 9:
1. Describe three ways to define a pattern in art or theory?
Three ways to define pattern are a repetition of a design, a repetition of actions or habits and template to create something.
2. How can a grid help to define a pattern?
A grid can help define a pattern because many patterns are created on a grid so the are balanced and ordered.
3. Describe the similarities and differences in pattern and texture?
The similarities between pattern and texture are they both are repeated but texture usually not  repeated perfectly. Texture and pattern are also different because is texture has a sense of touch while pattern is just meant to be visually interesting.
4. How can texture be used to create visual interest?
Texture creates visual interest because it appeal to our memory of touch we image what it feels like even though you can not touch it.
5. 5. What is the difference between actual and implied texture?
Actual texture is texture of a surface that can actually felt.
Implied texture in contrast is created visually and can not be felt.
6. How do you define collage? Give an example
A collage is an art work created by gluing colored, textured paper, cloth and various materials to create a design.
An example of a collage is Romare Bearden’s Patch Work Quit.

7. What is tromp L’oile? (French term: fool to the eye)
Tromp L’oile is a style of art which the artist uses realistic, texture, color and value to creat and image that is so realistic it fools the eye.
Chapter 12:
1. Define Value and a value scale
Value is the term used to describes dark and light. The value scale is a scale seven values of grey created with only mixed  black and white.
2. What is achromatic gray?
An achromatic grey is a grey created only with mixtures of pure black and white.
3. What is a Value contrast?
Value contrast is the differences and similarities between dark and light.
4. How do you create balance in a composition with value?
To create balance in a composition with value there must be a balanced distribution of values and visible contrast in values.
5. How do you create emphasis with value, give an example?
Emphasis is created with value by the use of contrast.
An example of contrast in value as emphasis is Artemisia Gentileschi’s Judith Decapitating Holofernes.

6. What is chiaroscuro? What period in art history was the word originally used?
Chiaroscuro is using light and dark values to create the allusion of volume and depth. The word Chiaroscuro was originally used during the Renaissance to describe painting and drawing that used such techniques.
7. What is aerial, or atmospheric perspective? Give an example.
Aerial or atmospheric perspective is a way to show distance in art. Objects that are closer are in higher contrast and clearer to the eye and objects that are further away are in lesser contrast and therefore less clearly seen.
An example of atmospheric perspective is The Agnew Clinic by Thomas Eakins.
